The Evergreen Cross: Art That Tells the Gospel
An Oscar-nominated animated short film, Forevergreen, offers a beautiful reminder of how the arts can communicate the gospel in powerful ways. The story tells of a young bear rescued by a great evergreen tree. When the bear’s own choices lead him into danger, the tree sacrifices itself—falling across a chasm to become a bridge that saves him.
The image echoes the heart of the Christian story. Jesus Christ gave his life on the cross to bridge the great divide between God and humanity. Through sacrifice comes rescue; through love comes salvation.
Stories, films, music, and visual art can help us see the truth of the gospel in fresh ways. Sometimes a creative story allows us to glimpse again the wonder of what Christ has done for us.
At our Mothering Sunday service (9.30am at St Edmund’s) we will briefly reflect on this film and how creativity can reveal the love of God. Then, on Good Friday at 2.30pm at St Margaret’s, we will draw more deeply on the film to inspire our worship beneath the beautiful green cross in the east window. Together we will explore how the image of the evergreen tree points us to the cross of Christ — the place where love became a bridge for the world.
All are warmly welcome to this family-friendly and accessible Good Friday service as we gather under the green cross to remember the great sacrifice of Jesus, the Saviour of the world.

Serving Our Church: APCM Nominations Open
As we prepare for our Annual Parochial Church Meetings (APCMs), nominations are now invited for several important roles in the life of our churches. These include Deanery Synod representatives for St James and St Edmund’s, Joint PCC members (one place to be filled for each of our four congregations, including St James), and churchwardens representing each congregation, either through re-nomination or new nominations.
The APCM dates are 26 April at St James and 3 May at St Edmund’s.
These roles are part of the Church of England’s shared and democratic way of discerning leadership together. Please pray about who God may be calling, and consider whether you might serve. Your voice and gifts matter as we shape the future of our church communities together.
