From Wreaths to Worship: Entering Advent

Wreath Making
As we step into Advent, our churches are already alive with the warmth and creativity of the season. This weekend, St Edmund’s hosted a wonderfully successful wreath-making workshop, filling the hall with laughter, concentration, the scent of evergreens, and the joy of crafting something beautiful together. Combined with the vibrant Winter Fair at St Margaret’s – buzzing with music, stalls, and community energy – these moments have begun turning our hearts toward the festive season now unfolding around us.

This Advent Sunday, as we gather for our joint service and Bring & Share meal, we come not simply as individual congregations but as one family across St James’, St Edmund’s, St Margaret’s, and Grace Community. Advent invites us to pause, breathe, and look forward with expectation. It calls us to prepare not just our homes but our hearts – to listen again for the whisper of hope, the promise of peace, the song of joy, and the steady, transforming love of God coming among us.

And so we look ahead to a rich season of celebration: Nativity services, candlelit carols, Café Church Christmas gatherings, and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day worship across our churches. Each moment is an invitation – to wonder, to worship, and to walk together into the good news of Emmanuel, God with us. Come and share the journey.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

Whether you’re new to church or just new to the area, you are very welcome at St James, Moss Side and St Edmund’s, Whalley Range.

Our Sunday services begin at 10.30am at both churches and last just over an hour. They are relaxed, welcoming and easy to follow, even if you’ve never been to church before. We share in prayers, songs, a short Bible-based talk, and there is an optional opportunity to receive Holy Communion. Our music includes a mix of modern worship songs and well-loved hymns.

At the end of the service, the team would be glad to pray with you if you would like. Everyone is warmly invited to stay afterwards for drinks and biscuits, and often there is a home-baked treat to enjoy while getting to know others.

Children and families are a valued part of our church life.
At St James, children are fully included in our intergenerational worship, with a resource table in the worship space.
At St Edmund’s, we have all-age worship on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and Sunday School on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

If you would like to plan a visit or ask any questions, please get in touch — we would love to welcome you.
